The work, in plain English.
What it is
Design and installation of bespoke bedroom storage beyond wardrobes, bedside cabinets, dressing tables, window seats with drawer storage, and headboard-integrated shelving.
Who it's for
Homeowners who've already fitted wardrobes or bought new bedroom furniture and want the finishing details that pull the room together, and people whose bedroom simply doesn't accommodate anything standard-sized.
When you need it
During a bedroom refit, when moving into a house with awkward bedroom shapes, or when a wardrobe install leaves obvious opportunities for matching integrated furniture.
Why a specialist
Bedroom storage is furniture as much as carpentry, the pieces have to work with the walls, the ceiling and the existing look of the room. Bespoke integrates. Off-the-shelf sits alongside.
Small problems compound quickly.
Standard bedroom furniture always ends up leaving gaps, down the sides, above, or awkwardly under a window. Those gaps become dust traps and clutter magnets.
- Freestanding bedside tables never quite fit the space between the bed and the wall.
- Off-the-shelf window seats sit proud of the reveal or leave gaps at the sides: never quite right.
- Dressing tables bought for a different room block a radiator, a socket or a window sill.
- Headboards without integrated storage waste the deepest part of the wall behind the bed.
- Furniture that doesn't match wardrobe finish jars, worst in a room where wardrobes already dominate one wall.
Where DIY and general trades come unstuck.
- 01Fitting wardrobes first and never revisiting the rest of the room, where the biggest visual gaps often are.
- 02Ignoring headboard-integrated storage: a huge missed opportunity in most master bedrooms.
- 03Choosing dressing tables from freestanding ranges rather than designing them into an alcove where they'd disappear neatly.
- 04Forgetting sockets and cable management, bedside cabinets these days need power for lamps and phones, not just drawers.

The specifics, materials, methods, and where each option fits.
Bedroom storage beyond wardrobes is where a bedroom gets its personality, the small pieces that everyone actually touches every day.

Built to sit exactly between the bed and the wall, with drawers, a shelf, or a combination, and cable outlets planned in for lamps and phone chargers.
Window seats
Bench seats built into window reveals with hinged lids or drawers underneath, perfect for bedding storage, or as a reading spot in a bay window.
Dressing tables
Integrated dressing tables built into alcoves, with a drawer bank, knee well and mirror-friendly proportions.
Headboard storage
Integrated bookshelving or cupboards forming the headboard wall behind the bed, using the deepest, most under-used wall in most master bedrooms.
Under-eaves storage
Sloped-ceiling drawers and cupboards for loft-conversion bedrooms and cottage rooms.
Finishes
Matched to any existing wardrobes or fitted storage, shaker doors, flat panels, painted or primed, hardware selected with you.
Straight answers before you enquire.
Do I have to have wardrobes fitted at the same time?▾
No, bedroom storage is often fitted as a standalone project, especially in rooms that already have adequate wardrobe space but need the finishing pieces.
Will the finish match my existing furniture?▾
Yes, materials, finishes and hardware are agreed at the design stage to match what's already in the room.
Can you build in electrics?▾
Sockets and cable outlets are planned into the design so lamps and chargers can be plugged in tidily. Any actual electrical work is carried out by a qualified electrician.
How quickly can I get a quote?▾
Quotes are free. Alex books your site survey in and completes it within 7 days of your enquiry: often faster. You get a clear written quote afterwards, either as a fixed price or a day rate, whichever suits the job.
How soon can the work start once I accept?▾
Most jobs are booked in within a month of quote acceptance, depending on the size of the work and the current schedule. Smaller jobs often slot in sooner, call Alex directly to check current availability.
How long does bedroom storage take to install?▾
Small pieces, a pair of bedside cabinets, are typically a day or two. Larger projects like a full window seat plus dressing table run longer. Timescale is set out in the written quote.
Is the work guaranteed?▾
Yes. Full installations completed from start to finish by AJW Carpentry, where AJW supplies all the materials, carry a 5-year workmanship guarantee. The guarantee does not apply to repair or remedial work, fit-only jobs where you supply the materials, or damage caused by misuse or third-party alterations after completion.
How do I pay?▾
Bank transfer or cash. There is no card machine on site. Pricing is agreed up front, fixed price or day rate, so there are no surprise line items when the job is finished.
Which areas do you cover?▾
AJW Carpentry covers Sidmouth, Exeter, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Seaton, Honiton, Newton Poppleford, Woodbury and Ottery St Mary. If you are just outside those areas, still get in touch, we often travel a short distance further for the right job.
Are you insured?▾
